Metro Detroit Weddings feature: “Raise a glass — and show off your engagement ring — with the season’s most swoon-worthy manicures”
#Flashback to the wedding cocktails feature for the Metro Detroit Weddings magazine. The best part was the beautiful manicure by “Next Top Nail Artist” finalist, Trish Johnson: @nails_by_trishjohnson This was the first photoshoot that I did where my hands were the focal point of the shot. It was definitely a challenge balancing a bright colored cocktail near the pure white dress that the stylist dressed me in. The director and photographer’s instructions were to present the engagement ring, the cocktail and the beautiful manicure, without getting a speck on the wardrobe…not to mention, looking natural while doing all of this. Easier said than done, right? Well I kept my balance and held my hands in a natural manner, all while following the directions of the photographer and creative director. I think it was definitely worth the effort, and the pictures came out beautifully.
This was a fun experience and I am very grateful for each modeling job I book. However, I am still hoping to book more bridal photoshoots…a shoot where my face is showing would be ideal. I feel that this is an area where Black female models are still underrepresented. When I look at the many televised and print ads depicting brides, I see an overwhelming number of models that come only from European/Caucasian descent–sometimes with a Caucasian or Black groom. When I do see a model in a bridal campaign, that I think may be Black, I have to squint very hard and am usually not certain even after that effort. Brides, and women in general, come in all shapes, sizes, nationalities and ethnicities…very eclectic, indeed! To only display the cookie cutter Blonde, or Brunette Caucasian bride is to send a subliminal message that this is the only face of women starting their families through the union of marriage. This is just not true. I hope to one day represent the many beautiful Black brides all over the world that enter into marriage each and every year through their dream wedding.
What do you think, my Eclectic Chic readers? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Have a wonderful weekend!
